About Salmon Fishing Rods
- A salmon rod is made to handle long and intense fights, the kind salmon are known for. The rods can handle a lot of stress and are designed with a stronger butt section so the angler can work and turn the fish. This stronger section does not bend and give as much during the fight. That also reduces fatigue for the angler and increases it for the fish.
- Salmon rods usually come with a larger butt section as described above but this isn't there only feature. The most common one among all the different types of salmon rods is the length. The rods are typically 7 to 8 feet long, with most measuring 7 feet, 9 inches. They have a hand grip above the reel seat, which is large enough to hold on a large reel, and are usually made of graphite or fiberglass.
- There are many types of rods, each used for different types of salmon fishing. There are plugging, trolling, spinning and fly rods. Plugging rods are typically 7 feet long, have a flexible action and a spinning reel seat. Spinning rods are about 8 feet long, have a long casting butt section and wider line loops. Fly rods made for salmon are at least 8 feet long can handle 8 to 9 weight line and some have a longer handle. These are called spey salmon rods.
- The first thing to consider when choosing a salmon fishing rod is which type of salmon fishing you are going to do. If you are fishing in a river, a large spey rod that can cast a long distance is a good choice. If you are going to be trolling deep water for lake salmon, then a heavier deep sea rod is your best bet. Since you aren't going to be casting, these heavy rods are designed just for fighting fish and not for casting.
- Using a salmon rod is going to give you more success when you fish for this species. They have enough backbone to handle these voracious fighters and more importantly the have the strength to set your hook in their bony jaws and keep it there. You also won't break any rods when you catch a big fish. When you choose the right salmon rod for the type of fishing you are going to do, you will be able to cast to those fish that otherwise would be out of reach.
