Can Cats Get Heartworm Disease?

103 12
It was not very long ago many veterinarians thought that cats were not susceptible to heartworm disease.
It was though that this disease was only a danger to dog health.
That notion has now been disproven.
In cats, the presence of heartworm can be much more difficult to detect and the current tests are not yet 100% reliable.
As a result preventative heartworm medication is often given to cats started without the standard pre- testing that is necessary before given the medication to dogs.
Of course pre-testing is necessary if clear signs of the infection are noticed.
In any geographical location where dogs can become infected, cats can also get infected by heart worm.
The current rate ofinfection in cats is much lower than it is in dogs.
The cat infection rate is only5 to 20% that of dogs in the same general area.
This means that for every 20 incidents of infection in dogs there are 1-4 incidents of infection in cats.
Until very recently, it was thought that heartworm disease in cats was so uncommon that preventative pet medication was not needed.
This notion has radically changed.
This disease can be fatal to cats and steps must be taken to protect your cat's health.
Veterinary science has established that a great number of cat heart worm infections in cats were misdiagnosed as the disease in cats does not present with the same symptoms as it does in dogs.
Furthermore, symptoms of heartworm disease in cats are often very similar to the signs and symptoms of other more common cat diseases.
Preventing heartworm disease in your cat is a vital key to good cat health.
The most common preventative heartworm medications are given to your cat in pill form once per month.
This medication kills the immature heartworm larvae before they can molt into the damaging parasitic worm.
If the medication is given regularly, it is very effective in preventing your cat from getting a heartworm infection and eventual developing the full blown disease.
This pet medication is reasonably priced and easy to administer to your cat.
When you assume the responsibility of owning a pet you also assume the responsibility of maintaining your pet in good pet health and taking steps to avoid preventable disease.
