    • 1). Determine whether your G3 has the attributes to be upgraded to Tiger. Apple recommends 3 GB of free hard drive space; 256 MB of installed RAM and a DVD drive. You can find this information by selecting "About This Mac" from under the Apple logo in the upper left corner of the screen and clicking on the "More Info" button.

Back up any vital data before running the Tiger installer, using an external hard drive, a USB flash drive, writable media (CD or DVD) or an online backup service. Insert the Tiger installation disc into your computer's drive and restart the Mac while holding down the "C" key until the Mac reboots.

    • 3). Click on the right-pointing arrow button at the bottom right of the installation window, then click "Continue" on the "Welcome" screen. Highlight the internal hard drive icon to confirm the destination of the installation. Select the "Options" to select either "Upgrade," which upgrades an earlier version of OS X, "Archive & Install," which gives you a "clean" installation but allows you to retain your previous settings, and "Erase & Install," which deletes everything on the drive and provides a brand-new OS on your hard drive.

Click on "Options" to deselect some non-essential software items from installing, which will speed up the installation process and give you a little more room on your internal drive. Uncheck "Additional Fonts," "Language Translation" and any printer support options. You always have the ability to install these items at a later time. Allow the process to run uninterrupted. The computer will reboot upon completion.

    • 5). Populate the registration fields upon reboot, if you are performing a new installation. If you are upgrading OS X, then the fields are already filled in, and you can quit (Command-Q) this step. Pull down "Software Update" from under the Apple logo in the upper left corner of the screen. You will need to enter your administrator password to allow the upgrade to continue. Repeat this process until you receive the message that your software is completely up to date.
