How to Install Debian on an Intel CPU

    • 1). Start the computer with the Debian installation CD inserted. After a moment, the Debian main menu loads. Use the keyboard arrow keys to highlight "Graphical Install," and then press "Enter." The graphical user interface loads, giving you control of the mouse.

    • 2). Click your preferred language on the menu, and then click "Continue."

    • 3). Select your locality (such as "United States"), and then click "Continue."

    • 4). Select your preferred keyboard layout. If you are in the United States and using a standard keyboard, select "American English." Click "Continue." The Debian installation utility begins detecting your optical drive and network devices.

    • 5). Enter the name that you would like to use as the identification for your computer on the network, and then click "Continue."

    • 6). Enter the name of your network domain if you are configuring Debian for use on a work network. If you are on a home network, you can leave the default setting and click "Continue."

    • 7). Select your time zone on the menu, and then click "Continue."

    • 8). Select "Guided--use entire disk" as the hard drive partitioning method, and then click "Continue."

    • 9). Select the hard drive that you want to install Debian on, and then click "Continue."

      Select "All files in one partition," and then click "Continue" twice."

      Select "Yes" and then click "Continue." The Debian installation utility begins copying files from the installation CD to the hard drive.

      Type the word that you would like to use as the root (administrator) password for the computer. Click "Continue."

      Type the full name that you would like to use on the computer. Note that this is not the same as a user name; the full name appears by default on the email messages that you send. Click "Continue."

      Type the name that you would like to use as the user name for the computer. Click "Continue."

      Type the word that you would like to use as the password for your personal user account. Click "Continue."

      Select the geographical region in which you live. Debian uses this information to locate the closest server when you want to download and install new software. Click "Continue" twice.

      Enter the address of the proxy server that you use when connecting to the Internet. If you do not use a proxy server, click "Continue."

      Select a radio button to indicate whether you would like to allow Debian to use your downloads when collecting statistics on the most popular Debian software programs that users install. Click "Continue."

      Select the software packages that you would like to download and install. If you are a home user, some of the packages that you may want to select include "Desktop Environment" and "Standard System." Click "Continue." Debian begins to download and install the most appropriate software for the type of computer that you are using. This process may take several minutes.

      Select the radio button labeled "Yes" when asked if you would like to install a bootloader, and then click "Continue."

      Click "Continue" when the installation process is complete. The computer restarts, and the Debian desktop loads.
