Empire Wedding Dress Styles

    History

    • The empire style of dress can be traced back to ancient Roman and Greek times. The style was made popular, however, in the Directoire and Empire period of 1795 to 1815. Dresses were more simple, with high waists to create a long and narrow silhouette. Empire-style dresses were popular until around 1805, when a more reserved style came back into fashion. Empire dresses made a comeback in the 1960s, and have been in style ever since.

    The Empire Wedding Dress

    • These days, empire wedding dresses come in many different shapes and styles. The waistline stays the same, but the rest of the dress varies widely. You can get babydoll-style wedding dresses, empire waists with long skirts (like the classic style), strapless, long sleeves or sleeveless, to name a few. If you think an empire wedding dress might be for you, start by trying on a classic-style dress, and if you like the waistline and style, see what other designs you can try.

Is an Empire Dress for You?

    • Empire dresses suit pretty much anyone. The loose skirt can hide a multitude of sins. If you're short, the high waist can make you look taller by making your body appear longer. If you are small breasted, the empire can make the most of what you've got. Empire dresses are perfect for simple weddings or destination weddings, but they are so classic that you could even get away with wearing one at a huge blowout wedding. Of all the styles of wedding dresses, empire dresses are the most versatile.

    Accessories

    • To stick with the simple, classic lines of your empire wedding dress, choose some simple, classic accessories to go with it. Choose a simple pearl or diamond necklace and some earrings, and perhaps an ivory flower in your hair rather than a veil. Of course, the accessories depend on the style of the bride, so make sure you wear something you would normally choose to be true to yourself.

    Shoes

    • Your shoes should depend on the style of your empire dress, and the style of your wedding. Flip flops and a simple empire dress are perfect for a beach wedding; simple pumps and an empire dress with long, bell-bottomed sleeves look great with an outdoor theme. Whatever you choose, make sure they are comfortable as you'll be on your feet all day, and make sure they compliment the beauty of your empire dress. Now, enjoy the compliments!
