Fishing Guide for Homosassa, Florida
- There are almost too many kinds of fish to mention them all, but the most common fish in the Homosassa area waters are spotted sea trout, tarpon, flounder, pompano (yum), mackerel, snook, red fish and blue fish. Some of the lesser known but equally as plentiful are sheep's head, cobia, jacks, bonnet head, lady fish and black drum.
- Spotted sea trout actually are part of the drum family and similar to regular sea trout. They average about 4 pounds on the western waterways and a little larger on the eastern waterways. The best time to snag them inland is during the spawning season March through November, although December is an excellent month as well.
- Tarpon are an incredible game fish that live primarily inland but spawn at sea. If you want a good fight on your hands, go after tarpon in May and June. The average size tarpon is 40 to 50 pounds, but the record for the state is a 243-pounder. March, April and July are also good months if tarpon are what you're after.
- If you're a sushi fan, Pompano is the fish you will want to catch. It is prized for its firm, yet delicate white meat to eat raw. The average size in Florida is about 18 inches long, weighing about 3 pounds. They are found in inshore and nearshore waters, particularly along sandy beaches, oyster banks and over grass beds. Don't expect to find many between March and September, when they will be spawning in the sea.
- There are many charter boat excursions available for full or half-day tours. Prices are in the $350 range for a half-day and $450 for a full day as of 2010. The price is for two people. If your travel plans include non-fishing friends or family, there are plenty of other activities in and around the quaint town of Homosassa (population 2,300), including taking a swim with manatees that are plentiful and playful.
