How to Sew a Rabbit Bed

    Making the Rabbit Bed

    • 1). Measure your rabbit from the tip of its nose to the end of its tail using a soft tape measure. Round this number up to the nearest inch. Add 8 inches to this number to accomodate the stuffing and the rabbit's legs.

    • 2). Cut a circle out of the craft paper with a diameter equal to the measurement from step 1.

    • 3). Using the paper circle as a guide, cut two circles out of the terrycloth fabric.

    • 4). Use the soft measuring tape to measure along the circumference of the paper circle. Cut a piece of terrycloth that is 4 inches high and as long as the circumference of the paper circle. Fold this piece of fabric in half lengthwise, wrong sides facing, and stitch the long raw edges closed using a 1/4-inch seam creating a fabric tube. Stuff the tube with polyester stuffing. This piece will form the side of the rabbit bed.

    • 5). Place the two circular pieces of fabric on top of each other, right sides together, to form the top and bottom of the bed. Pin the raw long edges of the side of the bed (stuffed fabric tube) all the way around the edge of the bottom round circular piece, with right sides facing; sew that seam all the way around. Then pin the other side of the long edge of the side of the bed (the stuffed fabric tube) all the way around the edge of the top round circular piece. For the top, however, do not sew the seam completely closed. Leave a gap of approximately 4 inches in this seam so that you can stuff the bottom of the bed with polyester stuffing. When sewing these seams, remember that you'll be turning the bed inside out when you're ready to stuff the bottom. Make sure all right sides will face out and wrong sides will face in. Also make sure that the side of the bed, which was stuffed in step 4, is inside when sewing the seams so that it will be outside when the bed is turned inside out.

    • 6). Turn the bed inside out and stuff the bottom of the bed with the polyester stuffing. Your rabbit will probably like a semi-firm surface to rest on, so stuff it well. Distribute the stuffing evenly around the base to make the bed more comfortable for your rabbit.

    • 7). Close the 4-inch gap with a needle and thread. This finishing will result in a neater closure with fewer areas for the rabbit to chew. Use your hands to redistrubute any stuffing that was moved when you stitched the gap closed, and the rabbit bed is finished.
