How to Dissolve Rust
- 1). Open windows to have fresh air in the work area. Commercial rust removers are toxic.
- 2). Put on heavy duty gloves to protect the hands.
- 3). Pour a silver dollar-sized amount of rust remover onto a steel wool pad. Double this amount if rust is extensive.
- 4). Apply the rust remover only to the rusted areas.
- 5). Leave the rust remover on for around 10 to 15 minutes. This is all the time needed in most cases because rust removers contain phosphoric acid, oxalic acid, hydrochloric acid or other powerful acids that dissolve rust in a short period of time.
- 6). Wipe off the rust remover using rags. Throw them away after use.
- 7). Repeat Steps 3 to 6 if rust remains, but this will rarely be necessary. Commercial rust removers are extremely effective in dissolving rust.
