If you love pyrotechnics and are thinking of setting off your own fireworks in Brooklyn, for New Years or July 4th, Chinese New Year, your wedding or just for the fun of it: DON'T. Many tourists come to New York City from states in the US and foreign countries where it is legal for citizens to light fireworks.

Not in NYC.

But not to worry. There are plenty of opportunities to see fireworks, on New Year's Eve, during the summer at Coney Island (Summer fireworks in Coney Island), and of course on Independence Day.

15 Kinds of Fireworks You Cannot Use:  Basically, you are not allowed to use any kinds of fireworks. Specifically, here are some of the most popular kinds being sold, but that shouldn't consider using in NYC, because it's illegal:
  1. Sparklers -These popular items still remain banned in New York State.
  2. Bottle Rockets
  3. Sky Rockets
  4. Roman Candles
  5. Firecrackers
  6. Smoke and Punk
  7. Fountains
  8. Missiles
  9. Novelties
  10. Crackle and Strobe
  11. Parachutes
  12. Wheels and Spinners
  13. Sky Flyers
  14. Display Shells
  15. Aerial Items (Cakes)

Whats So Bad about Sparklers?: Sparklers are cute and fun, and many adults have happy childhood memories of using them-- but they are not harmless. “Sparklers can heat up to 1800 degrees (hot enough to melt gold) and can easily catch fire to clothing or hair,” according to the New York Fire Department, or NYFD.

Why Fireworks Have Been Banned in Brooklyn and NYC: Sparklers and other forms of fireworks present a health risk for those near the devices and especially for passersby.
The most dangerous kinds are firecrackers, sparklers and rockets.

According to the NYPD, "injuries are most commonly associated with fire-crackers (24%), sparklers (21%) and rockets (18%).

The people who are most likely to get hurt by firecrackers are under age 14.  The majority are males; where they get hurt are, as you might suspect, the hands, eyes, head and face. Over half of the injuries include burns.

It's not trivial. In  the US, every year some ten thousand people are hurt by fireworks--enough people to fill 25 jumbo 747 planes.

The NYFD cites the following real cases that have happened in NYC:
  • "A 33-year-old man was killed while setting off mortar style fireworks out of a black plastic pipe while in his backyard. As he leaned over one of the tubes to light the fuse, the fireworks suddenly went off striking him in the face. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead from head injuries.
  • A 4-year-old girl was injured by a 6-inch fountain that shot colored fireballs. When the fountain tipped over, the girl was struck in the chest by a fireball. She sustained 2nd and 3rd degree burns to her chest and neck. She was hospitalized for three weeks for burn treatment and skin graft."

What Can Happento You  if You Use Fireworks? You can face charges and big fines if found with fireworks. The official word, from the City of New York:

Any person possessing, using or exploding ANY fireworks in New York City is guilty of a criminal misdemeanor. The criminal penalty is a fine of $10,000 or imprisonment of six months or both. Such person is also liable for a civil penalty of $750.00.  (see NYFD)
