  Riverhead is a town of more than 25,000 people located on the north shore of Long Island in New York. It was given this name because the mouth of the Peconic River can be found there. The town was founded in 1792, but the land was purchased from Native Americans in 1649. In modern times, a popular Blues Festival is held there every summer and eight PGA-rated golf courses have been built in town. Tweeds Buffalo Bar‎

• Tweeds opened in 1896 and is believed to be the longest continuously open restaurant in town. It even kept serving alcohol during Prohibition by using dumbwaiters and secret doors. The restaurant prides itself on using local products in its meals and offering local wines to its guests. The menu includes grilled bison kebabs, roasted rack of lamb and a wide selection of shellfish. Tweeds is open for lunch and dinner every day, and free parking is available.

Athens Gyro & Grill‎

• If you are in the mood for Greek food, look no further than Athens Gyro & Grill in downtown Riverhead. Popular choices include pita sandwiches, gyro platters, Athenian pasta and a wide variety of wraps. They also serve local fish on Thursday through Saturday. • Jerry and the Mermaid offers a combination of casual dining, water views and both indoor and outdoor seating.
