Finding Your F.O.C.U.S.
Leaders have vision, which is nothing more than the ability to see into the future. Entrepreneurs are different. They need more than vision. Entrepreneurs must have vision plus the power of focus. Entrepreneurs must be able to see the future and turn their vision into a profitable reality. You'll find that 9 times out of 10, entrepreneurs fail even though they have great vision, a great product, or a great idea because they lack the power to turn what they have into a business that makes money. They lack F.O.C.U.S. - the ability to Follow On Course Until Successful.

Without focus, it's just about impossible to be successful at anything. Take golf, something I'm very passionate about. I have a lot of golf courses now, but there is a story about my Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles that has a lot to do with vision and focus.
It is a truly spectacular course fronting the Pacific Ocean but it had a problem. When I first bought it, one of the holes had collapsed into the ocean and rebuilding it involved an engineering feat and a $61 million dollar price tag. I had a choice. Fix the hole and keep the course as it was (it was an already very nice course) or redo it entirely and make it fantastic. Of course I chose fantastic. I wanted it done and done right, which allowed me to override any doubts I had during the long and arduous process. Fantastic would end up ballooning the cost to $265 million. When it was done, there were waterfalls, a driving range, crushed granite for the bunkers. Everything was first class and a tremendous success. Why? Because that was my vision for it, and I kept that focus throughout the whole process.
How developed is your ability to F.O.C.U.S? Ask yourself:
- How long can you keep going when times are tough?
- How easily distracted are you?
- How well do you sell your ideas to others?
- Can you convince people to invest time and money into a mere vision, a thing that does not exist?
- How prepared are you for the entrepreneur's world?
- Can you keep going, even when you doubt yourself?
Finding your focus isn't difficult to do, but it takes a lot of courage and strength. Most don't make it. They have vision, but lack the strength to follow through. A vision without the strength of focus leads to dreams, delusions, and hallucinations. You probably know a few people like that too.
Having a vision for something can be a powerful force for accomplishment. But it is those who persevere, those who take risks, those who never give up, those who do the hard work it takes, these are the ones who can be truly successful.
