    • 1). Back up all of your data. Plug an external USB hard drive into the USB port of the PS3. On the PS3, go to "Settings," "System Settings," then "Backup Utility." Select "Back Up" and choose the external mass storage device to back up all your data. This will ensure that no data is lost while installing Linux.

    • 2). Download the Ubuntu Linux ISO file to your PC (see Resources). Burn the Ubuntu ISO to a CD. This will be used later for installing the Linux operating system on the PS3.

    • 3). Format the PS3's hard disk. This will make room for the Linux operating system. On the PS3, go to "System Settings," then to "Format Utility." Choose "Format Hard Disk" and select "Yes" when prompted. Select "Custom" and then "Allot 10GB to the Other OS." Choose "Quick Format," then select "Yes" when prompted. Finally, press "X" to restart the system after formatting is complete.

    • 4). Connect your USB mouse and keyboard to the PS3. This will allow you to easily control the installation.

    • 5). Insert the Ubuntu CD into the PS3. Navigate to "System Settings," then to "Install Other OS." Choose "Other OS" and select "Yes." The system will restart and install Linux Ubuntu on your PS3.

    • 6). Update your PS3. Navigate to "Settings," then to "System Update," then to "Update via Internet."
