How to Remove Paint Sludge
- 1). Loosen as much of the sludge as possible with a paint scraper or putty knife; these tools will gradually help lift the majority of the paint.
- 2). Apply a chemical paint remover over the residue too thick to be removed with tools, using a brush or paint roller. Allow the remover to set for the time shown on the product label.
- 3). Scrub the painted surface with a scouring pad or fine steel-wool pad to loosen it.
- 4). Clean large quantities of paint sludge with a pressure washer as a fast and convenient alternative. Place a plastic lining or tarp over all nearby surfaces you do not want to get wet.
- 5). Set the wand of the pressure washer to low pressure and a concentrated spray pattern. Hold the wand a 45-degree angle to the painted surface. Squeeze the trigger to begin spraying the paint sludge.
- 6). Increase the pressure setting gradually if necessary to remove any trace of the sludge. Allow the cleaned surface to air-dry for 24 hours period before washing it.
