    Powdered Detergent

    • 1). Grate a bar of laundry soap with your cheese grater or run it through your food processor. Since this is just soap, it will wash clean. You don't need a dedicated soap grater.

    • 2). Mix 2 cups borax and 2 cups washing soda with 1 cup grated soap. Mix well with a wooden spoon.

    • 3). Store the soap in an airtight container. Use 3 tbsp. for an average load of laundry. For best results, start water running into machine and add detergent before adding clothing.

    Liquid Detergent

    • 1). Grate a bar of laundry soap with a cheese grater or a food processor.

    • 2). Mix the soap shavings with 4 cups water in a sauce pan. Heat on low until the soap melts.

    • 3). Fill a bucket with 3 gallons of hot water. Mix in 1 cup of borax and 2 cups of washing soda. Stir until completely dissolved. Pour in the melted soap and stir well. Let this mixture sit overnight. Use 1 cup of the resulting gel per load of laundry. Cover the bucket with the lid for storage.
