    Pittsburgh

    • An industrial city with a bad reputation, Pittsburgh is actually western Pennsylvania's largest city and offers a number of attractions and activities for travelers and families. Some of these include: the August Wilson Center for African-American Culture, the Carnegie Science Center, the National Aviary and the Museum of Art. Consider heading to a Pittsburgh Steelers game, a theater show, a local casino, an Italian restaurant or steakhouse or head to a weekend farmers' market for fresh produce, jellies and jams.

    Pittsburgh Countryside

    • Long-popular with Pittsburgh residents, the Pittsburgh countryside offers plenty of indoor and outdoor activities for tourists and locals alike. Attractions and activities include antique shopping, local museums, outlet shopping, small towns with preserved main streets, historic homes and buildings, 47 covered bridges, quaint Bed and Breakfasts, dozens of golf courses and over 1,000 miles of hiking and biking trails. There are also swimming and water sport opportunities at local lakes and rivers.

    Laurel Highlands

    • The Laurel Highlands are home to popular ski resorts, over a dozen golf courses and the Great Allegheny Passage, which is popular with bikers in the fall, spring and summer months. There are also historic Indian war sites, half a dozen amusement parks and Adventure Center at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, with its rock-climbing, paintballl and mini-golf opportunities. In addition, three homes designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright's are located in the Laurel Highlands: Duncan House at Polymath Park Resort, Kentuck Knob and Falling Water. This area is notable for its picturesque landscapes and outdoor opportunities.

    Pennsylvania Great Lakes Region

    • The Great Lakes Region has been a long-time favorite for Pennsylvania vacationers, and offers plenty of activities and attractions for tourists and families. Some of these include: the 100-year-old Conneaut Lake Amusement Park, as well as nearly a dozen other amusement parks, the Erie National Wildlife Refuge, the Tom Ridge Environmental Center for kids, as well as dozens of local art and history museums. Also, sunbathers will enjoy the area's many beaches, as well as the plentiful swimming and water sport opportunities on Lake Erie.

    Western Pennsylvania State Parks

    • Western Pennsylvania is home to a number of state parks. These include: Ohiopyle State Park, which features the Youghiogheny River; Laurel Ridge State Park, composed of 13,625 acres in the Laurel Highlands; Oil Creek State Park, home to America's first oil well; McConnell's Mill State Park, with its historic mill and hiking trails; Moraine State Park, where visitors can find man-made Moraine Lake; Raccoon Creek State Park, with its 101-acre lake; and Erie Bluffs State Park on Lake Erie, as well as Presque Isle State Park, with its seven miles of sandy beaches.
