A circus theme is one of the most popular for a child's party. Both boys and girls of all ages like circus-themed parties, and they is inexpensive and easy to plan and host. The circus theme can also be used successfully for teens and adult parties, with the same types of invitations, decorations, food and games modified to fit the age group. - Handmade banners, in bright colors of red, yellow and white like those in the big top, can be used to announce the big top, the birthday child and areas for food and games. Create flag-style banners by stringing together colorful, long triangles of light-weight paper or felt. To create the illusion of a big top roof, use yellow and red crepe paper streamers gathered and tied together. Attach the gathered streamers on the ceiling in the center of the room. Take each individual streamer, twist it, and attach the ends to the walls at a height of about 6 1/2 feet. Continue to do each streamer in this manner, attaching them about 1 1/2 feet apart around the room.
- Part of the excitement of a circus are all the booths offering food and games. You can create similar booths for your party by either using twisted crepe paper or striped fabric attached to a frame of PVC pipe. Cut white PVC pipe with a hand hacksaw to the desired lengths for the height and depth of your booth. Use corner joints and couplings to attach the PVC pipe lengths together to form the booth structure. Place several small booths around the party area. Paint large signs or banners with the name of the activities or prizes being offered at each booth, such as Popcorn, Hot Dogs-Cake, or Ring Toss, Photo Booth and Fish for Prizes.
- Large stuffed animals, inflatable animals, animal pinatas and hand-painted cardboard cut-outs of circus animals are all ideal for extra decor to give the atmosphere of a circus. Build cages for the animals with crepe paper streamers, adding signs that say "Do No Feed the Animals." Or if you are having the circus party outdoors, place some of the animals in trees, bushes, on roofs and in trees. Incorporate these stuffed animals into a treasure hunt game. Small stuffed animals used for decoration can also become prizes and favors for the guests.
