Northern Michigan and Wisconsin offer some of the Midwest's most appealing vacation spots. Fishing, waterskiing, swimming, sailing, wakeboarding, and sunbathing are just some of the many activities you'll find in these popular vacation spots. While most lake shore vacation spots are found along the Great Lakes, others, such as those in Wisconsin, are on smaller lakes. Be sure to make lodging reservations in advance, especially on holiday weekends and during the summer. - White sandy beaches are perhaps the last thing you'd expect to find in Michigan, but this vacationer's paradise has plenty of them. Located in the northwest section of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, Traverse City is home to breathtaking beaches, a bustling tourist city and some of America's most famous cherries. Nearby Leelanau Penninsula and Old Mission Penninsula are the heart of Michigan's wine country and restaurants around Traverse City serve a wide selection local wines. Other local attractions include golf courses, two busy casinos and lots of boutique shopping.
- Just east of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, this rustic, untainted island is one of the region's most spectacular vacation spots. Due to an island-wide ban on automobiles, the only means of transport on Mackinac are by foot, bicycle, horse or carriage. Though just 3.8 square miles, Mackinac Island is home to several important historic sites, including Fort Mackinac, Michigan's only remaining Revolutionary War fort, and The Grand Hotel, home to the world's largest porch, measuring at 660 feet. Mackinac Island's pristine shoreline offers plenty of opportunities to soak up the sun and swim to your heart's content in the cool waters of Lake Huron. Outdoor lovers will enjoy the nearly 80 percent of the island that makes up Mackinac Island State Park.
- Not to be confused with Switzerland's largest freshwater lake, Wisconsin's Lake Geneva is an enormously popular vacation destination for residents of Chicago and Milwaukee. Lake Geneva is actually the name of the city that borders Geneva Lake, which is known as the iceboat capital of the world. Other smaller settlements along the lake include the villages of Fontana-on-Geneva-Lake and Williams Bay. Renowned for its beauty and tranquility, Geneva Lake is popular with fishermen, vacationers, honeymooners and families. The area is filled with charming bed and breakfasts, antique stores and golf courses.
