How to Create a RAM Drive
- 1). Download Microsoft's RAM disk driver or a third-party RAM disk driver based on Microsoft's. Save this file to a location you can easily find, such as your Desktop.
- 2). Click "Start" then "Control Panel." Select "Add/Remove Hardware."
- 3). Click "Next." Click "Yes, I have already connected the device." Click "Add a New Device" then "Install the Hardware that I manually select from a list." Select "Other (All) Devices." Click "Have Disk." Use the Explorer window to navigate to the folder where you saved the RAM disk driver. Click the file with the .inf extension. Click "Next" twice. Click "Finish."
- 4). Click "Start" and right-click "My Computer." Click "Properties." Make a note of the amount of RAM you have on your computer on the main properties tab. Go to the "Hardware" tab and press the "Device Manager" button. Click the plus sign next to "RAM Disk" and right-click the RAM disk entry. Choose "Properties."
- 5). Go to the "RAM Disk Properties" tab. Choose the RAM disk size from the drop-down menu. The size of the RAM disk depends on how much memory you have installed on your computer. You don't want to use more than half of your system memory as a hard drive and less than that if you are using memory intensive programs or use many programs open simultaneously.
