Laser Disc Technology
- The laser disc is a 250 mm CD-like disc that uses pits etched into the disc surface to play audio and video. Laser disc players used a laser to "read" the pits to reproduce the audio and video.
- The earliest laser disc was made in 1928 by a Scottish inventor named John Logie Baird. His invention was called the Phonodisc.
- In 1970, Sony and Phillips started to develop laser discs, but had little luck selling them because you could not record on them and the equipment was expensive.
- Pioneer developed a karaoke-style laser disc that became widely popular in Asia.
- The laser disc was eventually replaced by the dual layer CD, called a DVD.
